My story

From packing floors to accounting to business analytics.

My path into finance and data was built step by step: work first, then accounting qualifications, then a business analytics degree, and now finance and Power BI reporting every day.

Deakin University graduation
  1. Starting with mathematics

I completed two years of undergraduate mathematics study in Cambodia before relocating to Australia. It was not a completed degree, but it built the habit of working with numbers that I still rely on.

  2. Settling in and working

I worked as a Packer at LJM Marketing Services, supporting accurate, timely packaging and quality-control checks while following workplace safety and product standards. Alongside work, I completed a Certificate III in EAL (Employment) at Chisholm Institute (November 2018 – February 2020).

  3. Building an accounting foundation

I then studied accounting step by step: a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (2020) and a Diploma of Accounting (2021), both at Chisholm Institute, and an Advanced Diploma of Accounting at Monarch Institute (2022).

  4. Learning to work with data and clients

During my Bachelor of Business Analytics, I worked as a casual professional in Deakin's Student as Partners program (July – December 2023), designing surveys and running user research on online exam-system usability. I also completed a Work Integrated Learning placement as a Business Consultant with Water Polo Australia (November 2023 – January 2024), where I researched industry trends and competitors and worked with a six-member consulting team to support a client's project.

  5. Assistant Accountant, with a growing BI focus

At Utility Solutions Group, I prepare financial and operational reporting and present weekly insights to leadership. I manage budgeting and variance analysis, reconcile financial datasets, support month-end reporting, and review outsourced accounting work. I also build and maintain Power BI dashboards and data models for project costing, margins, and operational KPIs. Earlier in the role I handled Accounts Payable exceptions, Purchase Order resolution, and weekly payroll processes.

  6. Bachelor of Business Analytics

I completed my Bachelor of Business Analytics at Deakin University with Distinction, bringing the analytical side of my work together with my accounting background.

  7. Still learning

Day to day I apply financial reporting and analysis, budgeting, project costing, Excel reporting, and Power BI dashboards and data modelling. I'm continuing to develop SQL, Python, DAX, Power Query, and data modelling. Completed training includes Excel 2016: Managing and Analyzing Data and Power BI Essential Training, and the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) certification is planned.
